CHURCHES

S. Giovanni (XIX sec.)
Church of Santa Maria Del Rosario
![]() |
Very little is known about about the church of Santa Maria del Rosario in the ancient " Rione Taverne ". The building, which includes the entire Garofalo Chapel, has a rectangular lay-out. It is made up of three successive rooms marked by columns surmounted by low arches, the result of a bad restoration, which altered its original style. The construction of the new church in via Ferrante Imparato has caused this building to lose all religious significance and now it has been completely abandoned. Today the building lies in ruins. That which remains today is only a marble altar of little value, protected by a balustrade with a gate and a large tympanum at its highest point complements this structure. |
Church of San Giovanni

It is very difficult to establish
the time of the foundation of this church even if some documents make
people think that it dates back to 1120. Originally, the Church was
smaller and it was architecturally different. The present structure was
reconstructed in the 1870s, following Giuseppe Pisani's plan. This
artist designed a temple which had a Neo-Renaissance style, with a
cusp front flanked by a high bell-tower and a nave and two aisles with
side chapels. |

| According to the above inscription, then name "Teduccio" comes from that of the Emperor Teodosio. Among the most important works of the Church, there is an altar from the 1760s and the main altar in Rococo style. | |
Church of Carmine di San Giovanni a Teduccio
The church and the convent of the Carmine date back to the 1600s. This
church was originally called SS. Salvatore. It is found in Piazza Pacichelli. In
the 1820s it had been entrusted to Carmine Maggiore of Naples and since then it
has been known as " Carmine di San Giovanni a Teduccio". The church is
made up of a central nave with four chapels to the right and four to the left.
The vault of the central nave is of half-barrel shape and the apse is dominated
by a little dome. In the central vault, there is a fresco, which reproduces the
vision of the Virgin Mary. On the main altar, there is a great half-length
picture of the Virgin Mary of the Carmine. There are some frescos on the lateral
walls as well.
Church of S. Maria del
Soccorso

The building of the church and
the convent was authorised by Pope Alexander VI in 1500, but its
construction started only in 1517, thanks to D. Ferrante Carafa, who gave
some of his income for its construction. The benefactor's family had been
always devoted to the Blessed Vergine del Soccorso, in fact,
Princess Anna Beatrice Carafa of Scalea was also buried here.

| Façade: The exterior of this XVI century building shows a surprising analogy with S. Maria del Rosario Church. They have the same classical elements and the same vertical structure. | |
Cloister: The cloister,
called "degli Agostiniani", is a characteristic expression of artistic
value. Its layout follows a four-sided plan, in the style of the Renaissance and
it consists of two floors. On the ground floor the portico has an uninterrupted
row of pillars, surmounted by great arches, made of vesuvian stone.
